CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

No one spoke in the SUV as Titus drove toward the zoo, but Andreas knew everyone had much on their mind. Titus held his hand, and he felt as though he never wanted to let go of it. With the thought, he lifted Titus’s hand to his lips, closing his eyes as he placed a kiss on the back of it, whispering against Titus’s skin, “I really am sorry.”

“I wasn’t angry at you before, but if you keep apologizing, I’m going to be.”

“I don’t understand why you’re not.”

“Would you rather I was?”

“Kind of. It’d make me feel less guilty if you were yelling at me.”

“Why do you think I’m not?”

Andreas glanced at him.

Titus looked away from the road, showing him his smirk.

Andreas smiled, shaking his head at him, and kissed Titus’s hand again.

“I don’t know,” Daniel said. “I think I’d like to hear him apologize a few hundred times for the worry he put us all through.”

Ryunosuke nudged Daniel. “I think he’s done it enough. It’s not surprising he came out to check on the lion. What is surprising is he managed to get out of the mansion at all.”

Daniel snorted. “I don’t find that very surprising. He is Andreas, after all.”

Egill chuckled. “I knew he wasn’t going to be the obedient little apprentice, Cal, but I really wasn’t expecting anything to this extent so soon.”

Titus squeezed Andreas’s hand. “Odd though it may be, his boldness in doing things like this and being defiant are what I love about him.”

“That makes perfect sense to me,” Egill said. “You’d get bored with obedient.”

Andreas looked to Titus. “In my defense, I wasn’t trying to be defiant.”

Sarcasm thick in his voice, Daniel said, “Right. Because doing something you know he wouldn’t agree with isn’t being defiant at all.”

Ryunosuke kissed Daniel’s cheeks with grinning lips. “Since you’re the master of defiance, you would recognize that.”

Andreas closed his eyes in a long blink. “But I paid for it. I feel like I set myself back in recovering.”

“Probably because you did,” Titus said. “The question is, do you feel strong enough to carry this out?”

“Yeah. I want to do this.”

Titus pulled next to the curb and threw the SUV in park. “Then let’s get it done.”

Andreas nodded. Titus was in full leadership mode, assertive, confident, and commanding. He climbed out of the SUV, walking with Titus toward the zoo. His admiration for his eternal partner hit a new level. After everything he’d done, Titus was doing this for him without question, without making him feel guilt. Of course, he still felt his own self-inflicted guilt. But what affected him most was the true hurt he’d seen in Titus’s eyes at Carl’s apartment. If the vampires had caught him, he would’ve left Titus to face eternity alone. He cringed inside at the thought. Shame at his actions filled him. How could he ever have put Titus in such a position?

A hand rested on his back, warm and strong, and Titus’s low voice came to Andreas’s ears.

“Stop beating yourself up.
